2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Age of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is also evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
