Premier League Headlines: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Defence Has to Get Better'

From the world of Premier League developments, a significant player was given a lengthy suspension, a manager has pointed to a defender's errors to prove an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded defensive betterment following a wild victory.

Mejbri Handed Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was handed a four-game suspension and a financial penalty for misconduct during October's match against Leeds United. The governing body said the player faced a separate regulatory commission after an incident of spitting towards away fans at the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 win by Burnley.

A statement said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the Premier League match against Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that he acted against the laws of football and/or in an improper manner and/or engaging in abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting towards the direction of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement added, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-game suspension and a fine following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for its decisions are to be released in due course.” The team, now in 19th place in the table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Errors to Make a Point

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is not an issue at team, highlighting that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent him from playing poorly in the loss against Leeds United.

Maresca, who oversees the most youthful team in the Premier League, rejected the idea that mentality played a part in their setback. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, who delivered a mistake-riddled display at the back.

“We always mention experience when we fail to win,” the coach stated. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, nobody was talking about older personnel. I know that if we lose, people are constantly searching for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we lost against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we were not good enough.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player on our team on the pitch? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not good enough.”

Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'

The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have taken lessons from a recent scare at Fulham and the episode is now forgotten. City survived for a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.

Coming after they resisted a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior fixture, it raised further doubts about whether they possess resilient required to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” he commented. “Good lessons, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, one must learn from what happens in the good things and results and focus on what's next.”

“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to understand what happened, to not allow the goals. With the three goals by Leeds, and the five by Fulham you can see our sides, right? So, always we have done many positive things. Yet the number of attempts did Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts for Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of shots conceded is is high. We have to be better.”

4. Newcastle Focus on Livramento and Botman Contracts

Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving important backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and is pleased to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a contract extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.

That has left Wilson to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. Livramento's current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some importance.

“My first few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s deal is significantly better than the one I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is well known that we wishes to extend Tino’s deal and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”

Manager Eddie Howe will be missing Botman against the home game with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to remain out for a further period.

5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns for West Ham

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for they play Brighton on Sunday, after serving a ban for the red card he received Liverpool.

“That incident is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am positive it will not happen again as he personally admitted the error. We discussed it internally. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”

Nuno also understands the intense strain facing his team, who are 18th ahead of the weekend fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he said. “It is a reality. We must face it. We are battling for survival. We can't hide it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino
