Previous FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's attorney entered the answer on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the case terminated for various reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after the former president pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the court they aimed to present multiple motions to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to handle the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was originally overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Trump after his probe into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge read his legal protections and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the moment, the director was leading an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys allege James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he deceived the upper house by stating he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets data about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and slow" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for a long time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."

"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump posted on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and other people.
