British authorities has added an additional eleven more nations to its public advisory register regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.

Just recently, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after a number of high-profile events such as the fatal death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Government Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office representative the minister emphasized that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of methanol contamination.

"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.

"Should anything feels off, like a hangover that's far more intense than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor immediately."

The full roster of nations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
